Website article: slowdownstupid.niobe132004.net/inthenews/speedcameras/20101212-speed-cameras-revenue-takers-not-life-savers.phpMy opinion on this article is, this was something that was always known, though never proven. It's about time the Government got its backside into gear and stopped thinking about the revenue created and thinking more about saving lives. For those with the idea of "If you don't want to get fined, don't speed", it's not that simple. I wish it were. Yes, that message should be given to some drivers, but it's also a well-known fact that a good number of cameras are miscalibrated, the speed readings are not actually correct. The novel solution? Drive 10kph under the limit, you can be 100% sure you won't get booked... ;D Joking aside, every accident that takes place in an unmonitored section of road, where speed _is_ an issue, can be blamed on the Government. Not just the NSW Government, either - I live in Queensland, and we have the same issue here. No doubt it's an issue world-over - speed cams are only ever rarely located where they're going to save lives. Until they get off their backsides and do things properly, speed cameras are always going to be just another money-raising tool by greedy governments. Rant away, but keep it civil. - Niobe.
